It’s only been a couple of weeks but it already feels like we need a break. Badly.

TGICNY!

But when you get back, there’s something waiting for you. Nope, don’t bother checking your pigeon holes because this one’s way too epic to fit into those sad, tiny, little grey boxes.

The good folks in the Year 1 Class Committee were inspired by the massive musical talents that spill across the hallways of Bukit Timah Campus (mostly from Block B) and have put together ENCORE — an evening of pizza, beer, a camwhoring polaroid station and, of course, music.

Sounds like just another Law School chill out session? That’s where you’re wrong. This one packs a punch. 5 chosen bands will share the stage, pit their style and sounds against each other and fight to be the best band in Law School.

The guest judges are Prof Goh Yi Han, Prof David Tan and Prof Eleanor Wong. But that’s really just class participation, because 75% of the votes come from you. So be sure to come by to support your friends!

We spoke to the bands to find out what’s in store.

Elephant Bird

Who are you and what do you call yourselves?

We are 4 year 2s, and we are Elephant Bird.

What’s an Elephant Bird?

We ourselves don’t know what an Elephant Bird is. In fact, when IS an Elephant a Bird?

How/ why did you guys hook up?

We didn’t. In the words of mah gurl Kelly Clarkson “I do not hook up”. Besides, we’re all boys so that would just be gay.

Describe your sound.

Eargasms. That compel your feet to move. Oh and it’s also how babies are made.

Who do you guys look up to most, musically and legally? (You may take this either conjunctively or disjunctively.)

Conjunctively, the answer is Queen. There’s no question there. We are a former colony of the band, we’ve imported Freddie Mercury’s laws and we’re meant to be speaking Brian May’s English. Rezpekt. (This writer shares the same admiration.)

Who are you guys listening to at the moment? (Be honest.)

This local band called Amnesia Haze. I hear they have a sexy guitarist.

Finish this sentence:

When we’re not reading textbooks, cases or articles, we are …

Answering email interviews for starters……

What makes a band?

Synchronisation.

Which other band in the competition do you think will give you a run for your money?

Can’t say, coz we have no money. TANK YOU COME AGAIN.

Beer, wine or liquor?

Please, we don’t drink.

What should our readers watch out for when you guys take the stage at Encore?

Their minds, coz they’re gonna lose them.

HEADNOTES

Who are you and what do you call yourselves?

We are Headnotes. Greg is on Lead guitar, Haziq is on Bass, Isaac on Vocals, Jon Liang on Keyboard, Justin on Rhythm Guitar and Shaun is on Drums.

How/ why did you guys hook up?

Isaac approached us to form a band. We’ve worked together before for the Matric Week Dinner so getting together was an obvious choice. Jon Liang was included because he is a superb key boardist.

Describe your sound.

It’s hard to describe our sound purely because we do not subscribe to a certain genre of music. If you wanna know you can come down and support us 🙂

Who do you guys look up to most, musically and legally? (You may take this either conjunctively or disjunctively.)

Shaun: Musically, my drums teacher. He’s really amazing but he still keeps practicing new things and keeps telling us that a musical journey is a never-ending one. Legally, I think I might have to ‘look up’ to everyone.

Greg: Musically, Eric Clapton. Brit guy playing the blues and making it popular and awesome? A guy like this doesn’t come around very often. Legally, Lord Bingham of Cornwall.

Jon Liang: Musically, Mozart, Beethoven and Nicki Minaj (censored version, of course). Legally, the reasonable man on the Clapham omnibus.

Justin Neo: Bob Marley and Eric Clapton.

Isaac: Musically, Bon Jovi and Alterbridge. Legally, I really respect the current bench in the Court of Appeal. It is a mammoth task trying to create your own jurisprudence.

Haziq: Musically, Isaac Chua. Legally, Isaac Chua.

What are your most favourite things about law school?

Shaun: The feeling of relief I get at the end of each school day.

Greg: Good friends, good facilities (air-conditioned toilets), good learning opportunities.

Jon Liang: Awkward corridor moments. Law school is very small, with long and enclosed corridors…

Justin Neo: The beautiful campus, the interesting gourmet and the environment

Isaac: The friends and the diversity. Hate the fact that I didn’t get season parking though.

Haziq: Chicks. Awww yeah

Who are you guys listening to at the moment? (Be honest.)

Shaun: Nightwish, apocalyptica, tonight alive, AFI

Greg: Stephen Colbert

Jon Liang: Isaac

Justin Neo: Muse

Isaac: CN Blue

Haziq: Thio Li Ann/Lim Lei Theng/Kelry Loi

Finish this sentence:

When we’re not reading textbooks, cases or articles, we are …

Shaun: (to be fair i hardly read these things) watching sitcoms! HIMYM, TBBT,

Friends etc. or transcribing the drum tracks on my favourite songs for posterity.

Greg: Chilling out and talking cock.

Jon Liang: …reading muggers.

Justin Neo: playing computer games.

Isaac: Watching Youtube Videos of bands performing live or watching Korean

Variety Shows.

Haziq: Formulating Analytical Plans.

What makes a band?

Shaun: I think a good band makes music and enjoys what they’re doing. At the same time, they make music to please their audience and not merely to relish in their narcissism.

Greg: Hard work and practice and an open mind.

Jon Liang: A common passion for music, a good ear and humility.

Justin Neo: A group of people brought together through their passion for music

Isaac: The willingness to try new genres of music. Also, stamina, talent and loads of effort.

Haziq: Band-Aid.

Which other band in the competition do you think will give you a run for your money?

Shaun: Ashvin and Co. (Elephant Bird) I’ve jammed with these people before and the amount of talent there is astounding. Luckily we have Haziq with us!

Greg: Ray & Elephant Bird.

Jon Liang: All of them! Different styles, different sounds and all great musicians.

Justin Neo: All in the competition are equally talented and are an equal challenge.

Isaac: I think all the bands bring something different to the competition. It would be unfair for us to list one band as the band to beat. Hard to apply a standard throughout.

Beer, wine or liquor?

Shaun: Liquor definitely. One can do so many more things with liquor… but it costs so much!

Greg: Whiskey, single malt, on the rocks.

Jon Liang: Wine. Preferably white, fruity but not piercing, smooth, medium body and woody.

Justin Neo: Beer

Isaac: I actually don’t drink… so I’d say Apple Juice.

What should our readers watch out for when you guys take the stage at Encore?

Greg: Watch out for Isaac. He’ll smack you if he thinks you don’t like us.

Jon Liang: Isaac

Isaac: Rather than asking them to watch out for certain aspects of our performance, I think it would make for a more meaningful experience for the listeners if they approach the music that we’re going to play with an open mind.

Haziq: Isaac

ONE NIGHT IN WESLEY

Who are you and what do you call yourselves?

One Night in Wesley. It was our second choice after we reluctantly dropped ‘The Wang Sexperience’.

Beer, wine or liquor?

ONIW’s Liquor Shelf

What should our readers watch out for when you guys take the stage at Encore?

We’re gonna play loud, upbeat stuff that everyone will know and love. If you have two or more beers before we take the stage, you will love it even more. Also, watch out for

BLACKBIRD

Who are you and what do you call yourselves?
We’re Delise, Darrell, Chuan and Hurwitz and we call ourselves Blackbird after a song by Alter Bridge! Yes one bird.

How/ why did you guys hook up?

We’re all members of the very awesome OG2, and we made it a point to get (Prof) Goh Yi Han’s doppelganger on guitar.

Describe your sound.

A pretty otherworldly mix between (the good side of) pop and classic or heavy rock, of course- Delise has the voice of a rocking angel, Darrell’s a demon on the guitar, the sounds from Chuan’s bass will viiiiiiiiibrate you and Hurwitz’s keys are plain hellish

Who do you guys look up to most, musically and legally? (You may take this either conjunctively or disjunctively.)

Chuan: I’d say we’re greatly inspired by the musical genius of artistes like Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift. We’re actually a cover band that pays tribute to the both of them, although on rare occasions we play a little bit of Selena Gomez.

Hurwitz: What Chuan said. We really feel that Bieber, Gomez and Swift are severely underrated by many people out there; their deep lyrics should be re-examined by all the non-Beliebers out there!
What are your most favourite things about law school?

Darrell: Lounge around.

Delise: YES LOUNGE. And friends 🙂

Chuan: The Summit’s delectable spread!

Hurwitz: How elite and separate it is. Definitely makes us feel like a part of (and above) society.

Who are you guys listening to at the moment? (Be honest.)

Darrell: This hardcore band called Unearth and my usual daily dose of Alter Bridge and Dream Theater.

Delise: UNDEROATH (CONCERT IN MARCH), Alter Bridge, Paramore, Dream Theater and MONOGRAMME ^^

Chuan: Alter Bridge, Sara Bareilles, John Mayer, The Killers, The Beatles, Queen, you know, only the good stuff. Sometimes I put on some trance, allows me to club vicariously in that sense heh.

Hurwitz: A Fine Frenzy, Muse, Oasis, The Killers, The Beatles, Queen, Ash, Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, a whole bunch of videogame music. Sometimes classical music.

Finish this: When we’re not reading textbooks, cases or articles, we are …

Darrell: At the lounge.

Delise: OR RATHER, when we’re not at the lounge… wait, we’re always at the lounge.

Chuan: Writing them. True story.

Hurwitz: I don’t know about them, but I’m always hitting the books. The world is just so competitive, you know? Can’t let anyone get the edge over you. Life can come later.

Chuan: HAHAHAHA WITZ

What makes a band?

Darrell: Good friends and music

Delise: and similar musical direction.

Chuan: That common passion for GOOD music.

Hurwitz: Sex. Failing that, friendship.  … what? Who said you need music to create a band?!

Which other band in the competition do you think will give you a run for your money?

Darrell: There is money involved?!? Y U NO TELL ME EARLIER.

Delise: One Night In Wesley

Chuan: I think One Night in Wesley will be awesome. I mean the band, of course.

Hurwitz: Bands don’t run for my money. Girls do.

Beer, wine or liquor?

Darrell: Drink ALL the alcohol!!

Delise: Drink ALL the alcohol!!

Chuan: Drink ALL the alcohol!!

Hurwitz: Red Bull and Shark for those late nights studying in school.

What should our readers watch out for when you guys take the stage at Encore?

Darrell: Definitely Delise on vocals.

Hurwitz: The Double Ds. No seriously, watch for them. They’re massive. On vocals and the guitar, of course.

Chuan: Goh Yi Han on guitar and Darrell on the judge’s panel. Darrell likes to swap roles sometimes, he’s kinky like that.

Delise: HAHA I LIKE CHUAN’S ANSWER
