Greetings law school! Today, we have invited not five, but SIX dashing guys from Year 2 (a.k.a. BTC BOYZ) to share with us their fashion philosophies! This would be the last article of our four-part Men’s Fashion series, but do look out for more updates from Justified for the upcoming year. (:
1. Joel Tieh
What is your fashion philosophy?
Joel: Whatever you wear is a reflection of whatever’s inside right? So I always wear whatever best describes my mood. Thus explains the mornings after Liverpool loses.
Why should guys make an effort to dress up in law school?
Joel: I think its just BTC culture, everyone dresses up in school!
Name one source/brand that has inspired your dressing and why?
Joel: It has always been a struggle between the air-conditioning in school and the midday walk through botanics. Whichever reason I choose to base my style on, the other almost always makes me regret my decision.
Do you have any fashion advice for the other guys in law school?
Joel: Fashion is kinda like an English judgment, its vague, amorphous, never really gets to the point (if there is any to begin with). And given my poor reading of English cases I don’t think I’m qualified to give any advice. Perhaps Lord Cheng Aik could shed some light on the matter.
Give me one quote on fashion.
Joel: It’s all about carrying yourself. If you dress like a cruise liner, but feel like a shipwreck people will know they’re staring at the titanic — because its bound to fail no matter how grand it looks.
2. Chua Cheng Aik
What is your fashion philosophy?
Cheng Aik: Life is shorts; unless you’ve got skinny genes for skinny jeans.
Or
You’re out to party and do not wish to wear your sweater as make-shift pants.
Why should guys make an effort to dress up in law school?
Cheng Aik: Cause you will get good vibes all around, but I’m not one to say. I’m either too lazy or the weather is too hot.
Name one source/brand that has inspired your dressing and why?
Cheng Aik: No particular source or fashion websites; just look around for inspiration… or thinspiration!
Do you have any fashion advice for the other guys in law school?
Cheng Aik: Clothes don’t make the man, it’s the man that makes the clothes. Nah; first impression always counts. Oh and attitude.
Give me one quote on fashion.
Cheng Aik: “There’s no fat in fashion” — Me; so why am I here? I kid. Not.
P.s. you can contact me if you wish to know who’s the stud in the pics 😉
3. Yee Guang Yi Maverick
What is your fashion philosophy?
Maverick: Dress to undress.
Why should guys make an effort to dress up in law school?
Maverick: To attract girls of course! Unless you’re Ernest Wong, who wants to attract boys.
Name one source/brand that has inspired your dressing and why?
Maverick: I love the NUS Law shirts because of their fitting — they give me curves where I have none. It doesn’t matter what kind of NUS Law shirt it is. This Pro Bono shirt isn’t even mine; I stole it from the PBG room. Sorry Wei Zhen.
Do you have any fashion advice for the other guys in law school?
Maverick: Be yourself! Your clothes should be a reflection of who you are. Unless you are Elias Arun, who is secretly a drag queen. Then don’t be yourself.
Give me one quote on fashion.
Maverick: The human body is the best work of art.
4. Ng Yuhui
What is your fashion philosophy?
Yuhui: Rolling up your pants solves all the problems (kidding).
Why should guys make an effort to dress up in law school?
Yuhui: I would like to think that it plays a part in making me sound more legit when I mutter rubbish for class part in Public Law tutorials. It doesn’t work for me for Equity tutorials because my tutor dresses better than the whole class.
It also helps me get larger portions when I order from the Summit auntie, although I haven’t been as successful as Nick Lee and De Hong.
Name one source/brand that has inspired your dressing and why?
Yuhui: I look at what people wear around me and think about how what they wear will look on me. Staring at the random passerby sometimes gives me an inspiration of what kind of clothes I should get.
I also subscribe to August Man and endeavor to make it to the cover of it someday. A man can hope, dream even and sometimes his dreams come true (E L James, 50 Shades of Grey).
Do you have any fashion advice for the other guys in law school?
Yuhui: Don’t go for leftovers… for clothes. I mean, keep up to date with trends. You never know if your new clothes may fit you better than your old ones.
Remember to look good when you do sports as well. If you need help with that please drop by the Law Club room and consult our lovely Events Director Joel Tieh and he will give you personal training on that. Who knows you might become as good looking and fashionable as J-Dragon!
Give me one quote on fashion.
Yuhui: Dressing is a way of life (Yves Saint Laurent). Then there is law school.
5. Ian Loke
What is your fashion philosophy?
Ian: (I try to pull off) simple, classy and timeless looks.
Why should guys make an effort to dress up in law school?
Ian: To hide our flaws and insecurities.
And because it’s cold in school, so best to avoid slippers and free shirts (but of course these are only my SUGGESTIONS).
Name one source/brand that has inspired your dressing and why?
Ian: Instagram. Everybody looks good on Instagram.
Do you have any fashion advice for the other guys in law school?
Ian: Buy one size smaller.
Give me one quote on fashion.
Ian: Dress to meet the ex.
6. *BONUS FEATURE* – Elias Arun
(Editor’s Note: The Chief Editor would just like to say that he got blackmailed into doing this by the five lovely gentlemen above)
What is your fashion philosophy?
Elias: Find an outfit that suits your personality. For example I can’t wear hipster outfits because I’m not a hipster like Ng Yuhui. I can’t dress like a stud because I’m not Ian Loke. I can’t wear sassy bling too because I’m not as fabulous as Ernest Wong.
Why should guys make an effort to dress up in law school?
Elias: Depends on your motivation to dress up for school… I’m dressed up for this because I got coerced into doing this
Name one source/brand that has inspired your dressing and why?
Elias: I like the style of classy gentlemen like Sean Connery. But obviously you can’t wear a three piece suit in Singapore’s heat (nor do I have Sean Connery’s face) so I try to adapt. The end result is actually just preppy la so ya
Do you have any fashion advice for the other guys in law school?
Elias: Dress whatever you want. A person with real confidence will be able to pull off any outfit. Like Joel Tieh.
Give me one quote on fashion.
Elias: My learned friend Ian Loke’s “Dress to meet the ex” is too good not to adopt. But nonetheless: “People will stare. Make it worth their while.” – Harry Winston
